Engagement sessions are so exciting! You’re in this stage of life where you begin to fully dream and feel that anticipation building for your wedding day. Engagement sessions are oftentimes the first big item couples check off their lists after the initial proposal. While these are frequently used for save-the-dates, they are just as important for commemorating this short season of life. You want these photos to emulate you and your love and capture the story of your season. A big part in the fun of that is choosing outfits that fit and sometimes that process can seem daunting!
So you’re feeling stuck on what to wear for your session? I’ve been there! Below, I’ll detail out some of my best tips and ideas to think through when planning out your outfits:
- COLOR PALETTE
- LAYERS, LAYERS, LAYERS
- INCORPORATING SMALL PATTERNS
- ACCESORIZE
- EVERYDAY WEAR
- EMBRACE THE SEASON
- THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING YOURSELF

COLOR PALETTE
neutrals and muted tones
1 // First up is the color palette! I love neutrals and always suggest it to my couples. These outfits create timeless photos, elevate the beauty of the space around you, and place the emphasize on the emotion and connection in your images. If you’d like to add some color and richness to your photos, I recommend adding in muted tones! I always suggest this over primary colors because they tend to be distracting in images.

LAYERS, LAYERS, LAYERS
2 // Layers! This provides such a simple way to add detail, movement, and depth into your images.

INCORPORATING SMALL PATTERNS
3 // Small patterns. Something as simple as having one person incorporate small a small pattern into your outfit picks can add some sweet detail to your images.

ACCESSORIZE
4 // Accessorize! Another great way to showcase your personality is with accessories! A great watch, favorite necklace, summer hat, you name it! This is an area you can be as minimal or detailed as you like!

EVERYDAY WEAR
5 // Everyday wear. Fancy is of course fun, but there’s nothing quite as comfortable as wearing clothes you’d wear for an everyday outing! Grab your favorite pair of jeans and that solid tee and bam, you’re set!

EMBRACE THE SEASON
6 // Embrace the season. Is it hot and sunny, windy and cold, or is the forecast predicting rain? Embrace the season and climate and dress appropriately for that!

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING YOURSELF
7 // Most important on my list is the value of being yourself! If you wear what you’re comfortable and feel good in, you’ll love your photos more for years to come. So in the end, don’t sweat it! The story and love you and your partner share is the number one most important reason we’re taking photos together. That will be communicated in your photos and something to be cherished for years to come.
